1. Correct your narrative according to the marks
that I put on your paper. If you saved the narrative,
then you can make the corrections on the screen. If
you did not save it, then you can retype the paper and
make the corrections. If there is anything marked that
you do not understand or cannot read, please see me BEFORE
the next class period so that you can have your
corrected narrative ready to hand in. Hand in BOTH copies:
the corrected essay on top, the marked copy below.
DO NOT hand in the prewriting or the outline.
2. EXTRA CREDIT - If you would like to earn extra points
to add to your test score on the Capitals, Apostropes,
and Quotation Marks test,do this: Type Review Test 2 on
page 543. Do not use any examples from the text. You will
receive three add-on points for this exercise. Type
Review Test 1 on page 555. Underline the corrections that
you make to each sentence. You will receive three add-on
points for this exercise. Type Review Test 2 on page 564.
Staple one comic strip to your paper. You will receive
four add-on points for this exercise.
3. Read page 90 "Common Methods of Introduction." Select
one of the methods and type an introductory paragraph
for this thesis sentence: The food servings at fast food
establishments should be regulated for health purposes.
The introductory paragraph should be three to five sentences
long, and the thesis sentence should be the LAST SENTENCE in
the paragraph.

that I had marked. If there is anything that you
do not understand, please see me. Staple and hand in your
corrected interview in this order: (1.) Corrected interview;
(2.)The original interview that I had marked.
2.First, read pages 557-563 "Quotation Marks." Next, type and
correct these sentences: (1) When the signal is given said the
director everyone start acting your parts in the scene.
(2) The biology instructor said Students, read Chapter 7
Healthy Everyday Plants and complete Exercise 1. (3) The
zoo attendent said "that visitors should not feed the
animals". (4) The short story Hands appears in the
book Winesburg, Ohio.
3. At the bottom of page 558, under the rectangular TIP
box, you have four incomplete statements. On the same page
that you typed the sentences, type only the answers that
complete the statements.

1. Type a final copy of your narration. Yes, the one
we have been working on for the past week. Hand in
your paper IN THIS ORDER: 1. Outline 2. Final Copy
3. Draft with revisions marked on the draft 4. Pre-
writing 5. Any other related papers that you want to hand in.
2. Read "Capital Letters" on pages 537-543. Using your
book for guidance, type these sentences and make all necessary
corrections relating to capital letters.
(1) After I graduated from High School last Spring, I
enrolled in a Sociology class in waco to learn more about
the customs of the british people. (2) I bought a Sony
Cell Phone to call my Cousin in france when she attended
a Summer camp with her methodist yough group. (3) She said that
she missed the dairy queen hamburgers and her daily coke.
3. Read "Apostrophe" on pages 549-556. Using your book for
guidance, type these sentences and make all necessary
corrections relating to apostrophes. (1) Jerry lost his' gym
shoes in the mens' locker room. (2) The two boys' couldnt
stand the dogs barking at their parents house.

Wednesday 9/10/08 and Thursday 9/11/08

1. Select an incident that you have been involved
in that you want to write about as a Narrative.
The incident can be a happy one, a sad one, one that
taught you a leson, one that you want to forget, or
one that you want to remember. Do not write about anything
that will cause you embarrassment if others read your
paper because others in the class will read it.
2. Do the prewriting on the incident that you have selected
and prepare a simple outline: a list of details that
you want to include.
3. Using the simple outline as a guide, type a draft of your
Narrative, about two pages long. Bring the printed copy
of the draft to class. You may edit on the paper if
you wish. Remember to save what you have written.
SAMPLE THESIS SENTENCE: I will never forget the time when
Grandpa Lopez started a fire in the kitchen.
Examples of narratives in the text include
"Shame" by Dick Gregory on page 645; "The Yellow Ribbon"
by Pete Hamil on page 212; "Bombs Bursting in the Air" by
Beth Johnson on page 715; you can see other narrations
listen on page xiii.
4. Review the notes that we have taken on grammar: what is
a clause, what is a phrase, is a phrase a sentence,
what types of clauses, how you can tell what type of
clause it is,etc.

1. Read pages 52-57 "Step 1: begin with a Point or
Thesis." Be prepared to do Activity 2, page 54 in class.
2. Read pages 57-65 "Step 2: Support the Thesis with
Specific Evidence." Be prepared to do Activity 8,
page 64 in class.
3. Read pages 202-205 "Narration." Read pages 207-213
"Developing a Narrative Essay."
4. Select a topic for a narrative essay and type a
prewriting activity for the topic. Use one of the activities
that we discussed in class. We will develop a thesis for
your narrative essay in class.
5. Most of this assignment is reading, so read the pages
very carefully.

Due Tuesday, 4/08/08

1. Using your outline on religion, write a complete essay
of 500-600 words(intro paragraph ending with the thesis sentence),
support paragraphs (each beginning with a topic sentence
that supports the thesis sentence), and a closing paragraph
(see pages 93-95 - do NOT begin this paragraph with "In
conclusion" or "In closing"). You can change your outline
if you get a better idea. You should submit your essay
to SmarThinking to get suggestions on improving the
essay. Hand in the papers in this order: 1. The outline,
2. The final copy; 3. Draft with changes; 4. Comments from
SmarThinking if you submit it.

2. Study the confusing words that we discussed in class. I
will give you a long paragraph to revise using these words.
If you find an error, you'll correct it. If the word is used
correctly, you'll leave it as it is.

3. Using your textbook and your class notes, evaluate the
sentences that are on the handout. Each sentence will be
identified as A. Fragment; B. Fused Sentence; C. Comma
Splice; or D. Correct Sentence. A good way to do this is
to try to correct the error that you identify. In class today,
you will also have a test over similar sentences with
similar errors.

On page 467, complete Review Test 2.
Underline fragments and write corrections in
the book. You may type the exercise if you do not
want to write in the book.

1. Since we did not have time for the test on
modifiers, study all your sources for the
test we will have on 3/11/08.
2. Read textbook pages 222-231 "Exemplification."
In this method of writing, you support your thesis
sentence by giving specific examples. Your thesis
sentence could be "My best firend is not very
disciplined." One example could be that he puts
off dioing assignments until the night before they are
due. Another example could be that uses his credit
to buy items that he doesn't need. A third example could
be that he is easily talked into doing things he
doesn't really want to do.On page 239, several qualities
listed under Writing Assignment 2. Select one of the
qualities and develop an outline that gives three
examples that illustrate that quality.
3. Read textbook pages 509-514 "Pronoun Types." Complete
Review Test 1 on page 515 or type it.

of Introductory Paraghaphs and examples of six
Common Methods of Introduction.The thesis sentence
should be the last sentence of the introduction
unless you add the Plan of Development as the
last sentence. See your class notes on the Plan
of Development. For this assignemnt, "Fast foods
should be regulated" is the thesis sentence.
Write at least four different Introductory Paragraphs
for this thesis sentence. The Intro Paragraphs should
be four to six sentences long. Identify the method
tht you are using. Type this assignment.
2. You will have a retest on Capital Letters. Quotation
Marks, and Apostrophes.
3. A Miscellaneous Writing is due.

Complete the exercise on page 107. You can write in the
textbook or you can type the exercise.
3. Write your essay on Narration. Select one of the
items that you brainstormed in your homework. Prepare an outline.
write a draft,save the draft, print the draft,
make corrections on the printed copy, make the corrections
on the saved draft, print a final copy. Your paper should
be from 350-600 words. Be sure to use specific details.
4. SAVE YOUR FINAL COPY ON A FLOPPY DISK OR A CD OR A

the first line of your paper, mention the topic
that you are writing about so that I can identify

Marks, and Apostrophes.
3. On a paper that you will hand in, brainstorm and
decide on an experience for your narration paper. The
brainstorm may be typed or handwritten. Pick an
experience that you think will be different from the
others in the class, but be sure that the
experience is something that you yourself were actually
involved in. Example: One night last summer, I learned
how not to talk to a cop. Example: On high school
graduation night, "Truth or Dare" became a not-so-funny
game. DO NOT plan to write about anything that
will embarrass you or humiliate you. Others will read
your paper.

and Titles," and complete the execises on page 93
and page 95 by writing in the letters suggested
in the instructions.
4. On page 607, complete "Editing Test 2" by following
the instructions at the top of the page.
5. I had handed out a sheet entitled "Editing Exercise."
Following the instructions at the top of the sheet,
complete the editing exercise by making the corrections
on the typed sheet. If you were absent when I handed
the sheet out last Thursday, come by my office on Monday
and get a copy.

write an essay from 450 - 550 words in length. Base your
introductory paragraph on one of the models on pages
90 - 92 and base your closing paragraph on one of the
models on pages 93 - 95. PROCESS: 1. Type a draft of
the esssay and print a copy. 2. Save the draft. 3. Make
any corrections on the PRINTED COPY. 4. Transfer the
corrections to the computer. 5. Print a final copy.
6. Hand in your papers stapled in this order: Outline,
Final Copy,Draft with corrections.
