Due Monday, 10/12/09 or Tuesday, 10/13/09

1. IN CLASS,we discussed five types of introductory paragraphs:
(1) The importance of the topic to the reader; (2) An incidence
or a brief story related to the topic; (3) Ask one to three
questions related to the topic; (4) Begin with a broad general
statement relating your topic; and (5)Use a quotation.
[The intros are different from those in the textbook.] Using
the five that we discussed IN CLASS, write an example of each
of the five methods using this thesis sentence: Fast foods
should be regulated. [This includes either ingredients, price,
advertising, convenience, or results of enticing people to
eat too much fast foods. This does not mean that the thesis
sentence is even suggesting that fast foods be abolished.]
The primary supports are I. Improve the health of customers.
II. Save customers money
III. Through ads,not entice customers
to eat more than they should
Each introductory paragraph should be from four to six
sentences. End with the thesis sentence. You may if you wish
end with the Plan of Development as the last sentence or as a
part of the thesis sentence.
2. Read "Parallelism" on pages 553-561. On page 556, complete
the first five sentences by typing the sentence as it appears
in the text. Next, underline the parts that are not parallel.
After the period at the end of each sentence, type a corrected
version of the parts that are not parallel. E-mail me if you do
not understand this assignment. Tell me what exactly you do not
understand. I will reply Sunday afternoon.
