Engl 1301, due Monday, March 7, 2011

1. Review your notes on parallelism; review
textbook pages 553-557 on parallelism. On Monday,
3/07/11, we will have a TEST on PARALLELISM. No
need for a scan sheet; this will be a written test.

2. In class, you had previously received these
definitions: a PHRASE is any group of words that does
not contain a Subject and a Verb; a CLAUSE is any
group of words that DOES contain a subject and a verb.
An Independent Clause can be a sentence by itself (see
page 418), and a Dependent Clause cannot be a sentence
by itself (see page 403+ "Fragments That Start with
Dependent Words). Type these words and identify each
as being a PHR (phrase); an IND (independent clause;
a DEP (dependent clause); NO (none of these).
1.in the house; 2.as the river flooded; 3. the child fell;
4.drivng the car; 5.since it was cloudy; 6.when you left;
7. on the shelf; 8. that is due; 9. over the sink;
10.while you typed; 11.laughing out loud; 12.for example.

3. Brainstorm and type ideas about this thesis sentence:
Automobile drivers can take steps to use less gasoline.
