1. Complete the Sentence Variety Test which you were
given on Thursday. You can write the answers on the handout.
If you type the sentences, be sure to identify above each
sentence the type of sentence you are typing.
2. Type and correct any parallelism errors in these sentences:
a. My job is to identify the type of gun used, mark it
on the tag, and to place it in the proper box.
b. I was cautioned that the water should be boiled before it
is consumed, and to wash my hands before I handle food.
c. After a hard day working in the yard, I enjoy a cool
drink, a thick steak, and watching sports on TV.
d. In order to repair the tree house, you will need a hammer,
ten nails, rope, and my friend Bob, the carpenter.
e. The judge told me that either I pay the fine or spend five
days in jail.
f. The chickens travel on the conveyor belt where they are
plucked, they are washed, rinsed, and a bag is put on them.
e. New appliances are usually much more energy-efficient than
running old ones.
3. On the same page, type and correct any Subj-V Agr errors:
a. A group of students are excused from the test.
b. Here's a bar of soap and a towel for your hands.
c. Adapting to two different cultures cause some problems.
d. Neither the producer nor the director want to give up.
e. A child and an adult has different nutritional needs.
f. Either the sandwiches or the booze has to stay behind.
4. Read "The Men We Carry in Our Minds" on pages 788-793.
Be prepared to discuss this selection.
