1. Write and type a Plan of Development for this thesis
sentence: The State of Texas should [or should not]
regulate fast foods.

2. During class on 3/2/10 and 3/4/10, we discussed
introductory paragraphs for an essay and saw a PowerPoint
that presented six different methods to write an intro
paragraph. Using the thesis sentence "The State of Texas
should [not] regulate fast foods," type an example of each of
the six different methods to introduce the essay. Remember
that the intro paragraph should be 4-6 sentences. ABOVE
EACH PARAGRAPH, IDENTIFY THE METHOD THAT YOU ARE ILLUSTRATING.

3. On 3/4/10, we discussed and saw a PowerPoint on writing
ending [or closing] paragraphs: what to do and what NOT to
do. Using the same thesis sentence from 2. above, type an
example of each of the six different methods to end [or
close] an essay. Remember that this ending paragraph
should be 4-6 sentences. ABOVE EACH PARAGRAPH, IDENTIFY THE
METHOD THAT YOU ARE ILLUSTRATING.

1. Read "Write an Introduction" on pages 112-113.
2. Read 'Write a Conclusion" on pages 116-118.

1. Read "Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers" on
pages 531-533. These modifiers concern the use of
single words, phrases, and clauses as modifiers.

2. For the sentences below,type the number of the
sentence, then type MM or DM to identify the modifier
error, and finish by typing a corrected sentence.
(1.) Shaving in front of the steamy mirror, the razor
nicked Ed's chin.
(2.) I only wanted a slice of apple pie, not the whole pie.
(3.) Martha told Bob that they could get married last
Friday.
(4.) While turning over the bacon, hot grease splashed
on my arm.
(5.) Taking the exam, the room was so stuffy that Keisha
almost fainted.
(6.) The tenants left town in a dilapidated old car owing
two months' rent.
(7.) The toaster was sold to us by a helpful salesman with
a money-back guarantee.
(8.) Tired an exasperated, the argument we had inevitable.
(9.) While pitching his tent, a snake bit him on the ankle.
(10.) I almost made an A on the exam.

3. Instead of typing an entire classification essay, type
an outline in this order: First, type TOPIC and type the
topic that you were going to write about. Second, type
PRINCIPLE OF CLASSIFICATION and give the principle or
idea that you are using to divide the topic into
three different categories. Third, type the thesis sentence.
Fourth, using original names,type the three categories.
Fifth, for each category, give at least two details. So,
you will have three Primary and two Seondary supports for
the outline. Refer to page 103. Your outline should look
exactly like the outline on this page.

4. Read "Bad Roommates" several times. The selection is on
pages 228-229. We will have a test on the selection.
So, know everything, including the author. This is the
second time that this selection has been assigned.

1. We will have two tests: Subj-Verb Agreement and
Parallelism. BRING A BLUE SCAN SHEET.
2. Read "Classification" on pages 218-223 and "Bad
Roommates" on pages 228-229.

due Tuesday, 2/23/10

1. Complete the Sentence Variety Test which you were
given on Thursday. You can write the answers on the handout.
If you type the sentences, be sure to identify above each
sentence the type of sentence you are typing.
2. Type and correct any parallelism errors in these sentences:
a. My job is to identify the type of gun used, mark it
on the tag, and to place it in the proper box.
b. I was cautioned that the water should be boiled before it
is consumed, and to wash my hands before I handle food.
c. After a hard day working in the yard, I enjoy a cool
drink, a thick steak, and watching sports on TV.
d. In order to repair the tree house, you will need a hammer,
ten nails, rope, and my friend Bob, the carpenter.
e. The judge told me that either I pay the fine or spend five
days in jail.
f. The chickens travel on the conveyor belt where they are
plucked, they are washed, rinsed, and a bag is put on them.
e. New appliances are usually much more energy-efficient than
running old ones.
3. On the same page, type and correct any Subj-V Agr errors:
a. A group of students are excused from the test.
b. Here's a bar of soap and a towel for your hands.
c. Adapting to two different cultures cause some problems.
d. Neither the producer nor the director want to give up.
e. A child and an adult has different nutritional needs.
f. Either the sandwiches or the booze has to stay behind.
4. Read "The Men We Carry in Our Minds" on pages 788-793.
Be prepared to discuss this selection.
