1. Narrow your narrative topic to form a
thesis sentence and an outline for a 400-
550 word paper. Type the paper using character,
setting, plot, and specific diction. Type your
ouline and then at the bottom of the same page type [1]
the word "characters" and then what or who the characters are.
[2]Next type the word "setting" and describe your
setting. [3]Then type the word "plot" and describe the
plot. [4]Finally, type the words "specific diction"
list some specific diction that you plan to use.
All of the can fit on one page. Due Monday or Tuesday.

2. Type your narrative paper. You can type your narrative
first before you type the items [1], [2], [3], and
[4] listed above.

3. Save your essay on a flash drive or zip drive or
thumb drive. We discussed this on the first class day.
BRING the zip drive to class next Monday or Tuesday.

4. If you don't clearly understand the assignment, e-mail
me or come by to see me or leave a telephone message.

Wednesday 10/12/11 and Thursday 10/13/11

1. Review your Grammar Notes.

2. Select and narrow a topic for the narrative assignment.

Due Monday 10/10/11 and Tuesday 10/11/11

1. Read "Narration" on pages 745-748. Know the "Four
Basics of Good Narration." [test on these]

2. Read "A Close Encounter" on pages 749-751." On
page 752, TYPE your answers to all the questions in
"Summarize and Respond."

3. Read your notes on clauses, complete sentences,and
phrases. Be able to recognize them. Read your notes
on run-ons. It will greatly help you to read "Run-Ons"
on pages 418-428. You will have a test on recognizing
Correct sentences, Fused sentences, and Comma Splice errors
plus Phrases and Clauses.
We will use the back of the Scan sheet that we used before.

Due Wednesday 10/05/11 or Thursday 10/06/11

Label this Assignment 4 at the top of the first page.

ALL OF THIS IS TO BE TYPED AND HANDED IN.
1. Use ONE of these general, broad topics for this
assignment: Listening, Obligations, Problems, or
Disturbances. NARROW THE TOPIC.

2. With your narrowed topic, write all of these pre-writing
activities: (1)prepare a web or cluster or map for the topic;
then (2)free write about your selected topic for 5-10 minutes;
then (3)brainstorm your topic;finally(4)write five questions
about your topic. These prewriting activities are discussed
on pages 68-70. Omit "Use the Internet" on page 71.

3. Develope ONE THESIS SENTENCE when you have completed all four
activities. [Four activities, One thesis sentence the same topic]

4. All of this is to be typed and handed in as Assignment 4.

1.Read "The Basic Sentence" on pages 385-400.

2. Read "Understand What Subject-Verb Agreement Is"
on pages 434-436.

3. Read "Commas in Compound Sentences" on page 676.
Know what a compound sentence is.

4. Read "a compound subject" at the top of page 389.
Compound verbs are connected in the same method as subjects.

5. Your next assignment is already posted. PLEASE READ IT
SO THAT YOU CAN GET A HEAD START.

Due Wednesday 9/28/11 and Thursday 9/29/11

1. Your first Miscellaneous Writing is due at the start
of the period. This writing will be graded. Be sure that
all papers are in order and stapled.

2. LEARN your class notes: clause, phrase, dependent words
and what they do,dependent clause, independent clause, fragments
[from PowerPoint], how to correct fragments,-ing words
as verbs.

3. From last week's PowerPoint and class notes: What are the
two parts of a thesis sentence? What are the four requirements
of a thesis sentence?
[All of this smells like a test to me. What do you think?]

Monday 9/26/11 and Tuesday 9/27/11

Homework Assignment #4:
1. Your first miscellaneous writing will be due on
Wednesday, 9/28/11 or Thursday, 9/29/11. Use any
topic on the Miscellaneous Assignment sheet, which
you have already received. If you do not have one, come
to my office to get a copy. Your paper should be from 250-700
words. Remember that you will write six essays on six topics
from this assignment sheet and that you cannot write on the
same topic more than once.
Follow the steps in this PROCESS:
1.] DEVELOP A THESIS SENTENCE.
2.] PREPARE A ROUGH DRAFT.
3.] PRINT THE ROUGH DRAFT.
4.] READ THE ROUGH DRAFT AND MAKE CORRECTIONS ON THE HARD COPY.

6.] HAND THE ESSAY IN WITH THE OUTLINE ON TOP; NEXT, THE FINAL COPY;
BELOW THAT THE ROUGH DRAFT; LAST, ANY PREWRITING THAT YOU DO.

2. The Formal Outline on the sheet with 44 items is due on
Monday 9/26/11 or Tuesday 9/27/11. You do NOT type the outline.

3. Read "Fragments" on Pages 401-413. Be familiar with the
fragments mentioned. Our next grammar test will be on Fragments
on Wednesday or Thursday.
