1. Your first Miscellaneous Writing is due at the start
of the period. This writing will be graded. Be sure that
all papers are in order and stapled.

2. LEARN your class notes: clause, phrase, dependent words
and what they do,dependent clause, independent clause, fragments
[from PowerPoint], how to correct fragments,-ing words
as verbs.

3. From last week's PowerPoint and class notes: What are the
two parts of a thesis sentence? What are the four requirements
of a thesis sentence?
[All of this smells like a test to me. What do you think?]

Homework Assignment #4:
1. Your first miscellaneous writing will be due on
Wednesday, 9/28/11 or Thursday, 9/29/11. Use any
topic on the Miscellaneous Assignment sheet, which
you have already received. If you do not have one, come
to my office to get a copy. Your paper should be from 250-700
words. Remember that you will write six essays on six topics
from this assignment sheet and that you cannot write on the
same topic more than once.
Follow the steps in this PROCESS:
1.] DEVELOP A THESIS SENTENCE.
2.] PREPARE A ROUGH DRAFT.
3.] PRINT THE ROUGH DRAFT.
4.] READ THE ROUGH DRAFT AND MAKE CORRECTIONS ON THE HARD COPY.
5.] FROM YOUR CORRECTIONS, PREPARE A FINAL COPY.
6.] HAND THE ESSAY IN WITH THE OUTLINE ON TOP; NEXT, THE FINAL COPY;
BELOW THAT THE ROUGH DRAFT; LAST, ANY PREWRITING THAT YOU DO.

2. The Formal Outline on the sheet with 44 items is due on
Monday 9/26/11 or Tuesday 9/27/11. You do NOT type the outline.

3. Read "Fragments" on Pages 401-413. Be familiar with the
fragments mentioned. Our next grammar test will be on Fragments
on Wednesday or Thursday.

1. Read "Making a Plan" on pages 100-104. Know
the three orders and what they are. Know the outline
for a short essay on page 103.
2. Read "Write Your Own Plan" on pages 107-108.

Homework #3
1. Read "Exploring and Finding Your Topic" on
pages 62-71.
2. Read "Making a Point" on pages 74-80. Understand
(1)a thesis that focuses on a single point,(2)a thesis that
is neither too broad or too narrow, (3) a thesis that
is forceful, not weak, and (4)a general topic and a
narrowed topic(page 80). Be able to explain each of these
four items.
3. Type Effective thesis sentences for the first three
sentences of: Practice 4 [p 81],Practice 5 [p 82], and
Practice 6 [83]. Do only the first 3 of each practice.

If you have already turned this in, you're okay.

1. Read "Word Choice" on pages 633-642.Pay particular
attention to "Practice Avoiding Four Common Word-Choice
Problems" on pages 634-642. Type three of your own examples
for each of the four problems listed in blue print.
Identify each problem that your type and your examples.
2.Study "Commonly Confused Words" on pages 647-656. Be
sure that you understand the different meanings.

HOMEWORK #2
1. Read "Apostrophes" on pages 688-693. On page 694,
complete Editing Review 1 by typing the sentence number,
typing the error(s) as they appear, and typing the correction
next to the error(s). Do this for sentences 1-4.

2. On pages 696-701,read "Quotation Marks." On page 703,
complete Editing Review 2 by finding the errors in sentences
1-7 and underlining the errors IN YOUR BOOK. Do not type the
errors, just underline them.

3. On pages 712-717, read "Capitalization." On page 718,
complete Editing Review 1 by typing the NUMBER of the
sentence, counting the number of errors in each sentence,
underlining the errors IN YOUR BOOK,typing the NUMBER OF ERRORS
IN EACH SENTENCE. Do this for sentences 1-5.

4. Be ready for a test on Wednesday or Thursday over Capitalizations,
Quotation Marks, and Apostrophes. You will need a Scan sheet.

type the word count two spaces below the last line. For
this writing, you can use any format you wish; just be
sure to type gramatically correct sentences.
2. Complete the Personal Information sheet.
3. Complete the handout on finding errors on Pam Andersons'
interview. Find the errors, count the errors, correct the errors.
4. Take the Grammar Pre-Test on D2L BEFORE 5 P.M. on 9/04/11.
