1. You should have handed in the in-class essay that
was to be completed on 11/10/10. You should have handed
in whatever you had completed. Be sure that you handed in
something to show that you did work on the essay.

Because of some problems with the availability of computers,
some students did not get the full two hours to complete
the essay. Next Monday, I am giving you the first 25 minutes
of class to prepare the final copy of the essay.

2. I handed you a page titled "Sentence Variety Exercise." This
page contains 13 numbers. Each number tells you what type of
sentence to write and gives you two sententences to be combined.
We did similar sentences in class. Write your sentences on the
handout; you do not have to type these. They are worth 7
points per number.

3. The next handout has two stapled pages with printing on both
sides. Page 1 explains the writing that will come from this
exercise. The next three pages contain an article on each page.
Carefully read the three articles. You are trying to find
evidence that "The drinking age should be LOWERED to 18," OR
evidence that "The drinking age should NOT be lowered to 18."
You can underline or highlight information in the articles.
That's all I want you to do. Just find information that will
support one of the statements or even both statements. DO
NOT WRITE AN ESSAY. Just hand in the three articles with
information underlined or highlited that will support the
statements. If you did not get these, come by my office
tomorrow and get them.

1. Study the grammar that we have covered.

Due Monday, 11/8/10, Engl 1301-1011 & 1016

1. In the textbook, read pages 517 to the top half of 519
on Adjectives and Adverbs.
2. Review the methods that were demonstrated in class for
joining sentences, including compound and complex,
appositive, compound verb, -ing word or phrase, -ed word
or phrase, adjective clause, to + verb, interrupting word
or phrase, opening prepositional phrase, opening -ly word
or phrase, opening adverb clause,and opening adjective [single word].

That's all you have for Monday, All of this material had been
previously covered in class at least on two occasions.

Due Wednesday, 11/03/10, Engl 1301-1011 & 1016

1. Type one of each: an -ed phrase,an -ing phrase,
a to + verb phrase, a prepositional phrase,a compound
verb, and a compound sentence.Identify each.
2. Prepare a final copy of the Comparison/Contrast
paper. If you turned one in Monday, it can serve as
a rough draft for Wednesday's final copy. Otherwise,
outline, print hard copy of the draft, correct the hard copy,
prepare a final copy. Print and hand in in this order: Outline,
final copy, draft, any prewriting. YOUR PAPER MUST BE
450-55O WORDS.

3. Your essay is due Wednesday, no excuses. Thanks.

Due Monday, 11/01/10, Engl 1301-1011 &1016

1. Before you begin writing, read pages 817-820.
You are going to write a Comparison/Contrast paper.
Your topic is about two people, one that you like and admire
and one that you have little respect for. Do Not mention
obvious things such as one weighs 150 pounds and the other
weigh 210 pounds. That is too obvious. Do not say one likes
country music and the other likes Hiphop; that too would
be obvious from just listening to their music. Instead,
be more abstract; list things that are NOT obvious, such
as character, honesty, loyalty,disregard for people.

You can make the abstract seem concrete by giving EXAMPLES
of the abstract qualities that you are discussing. DO NOT
limit yourself to the qualities that I just listed. Think of
your own. Ask yourself,"Why do I like (dislike) this person?"
Do not mention any names. Create names.
Outline, print hard copy of the draft, correct the hard copy,
prepare a final copy. Print and hand in in this order: Outline,
final copy, draft, any prewriting. YOUR PAPER MUST BE 450-55O WORDS.

2. DON'T FORGET THE MISCELLLANEOUS WRITING DUE WEDNESDAY.

Due Wednesday, 10/27/10, Engl 1301-1011 &1016

1. Review the DIFFERENT types of phrases that we have
discussed (e.g. prep phr, -ed phr).
2. Know the four parts of verbs (e.g. present form).
3. Read "Understand What Pronouns Are" on pages 495-500;
4. Read "Make Pronoun Reference Clear" on pages 502-503;
"Use the Right Type of Pronoun" on pages 505-508; "Make
Pronouns Consistent" pages 510-512. Write a one-sentence
definition for each of these three pronoun situations
mentioned on pages 502+, 505+, and 510+. In other words,
explain in one sentence what each of these means: "Make Pronoun
Reference Clear," "Use the Right Type of Pronoun," and
"Make Pronouns Consistent."
5. On page 514, complete Editing Review 3 by typing only
the number of the sentence with any error, the error itself,
and the correction. Do NOT type the entire sentence.

Due Monday, 10/25/10--Engl 1301-1011 & 1301-1016

1. In the book FROM PRACTICE TO MASTERY, read pages
78-79 "Identifying Biased Language." On pages 79-85,
read and answer questions 1-10. The answers are on
pages 251-252. Compare your answers and the book's
answers to see if you agree or not. You do not have to
type or turn this in. If you do not have this book,
then read someone else's to that you can be prepared
to enter into class discussion.
2.Read "Comparison and Contrast" on pages 252-259. TYPE
the answers to these questions: (1)What is comparison?
(2) What is contrast? (3) What may the purpose be to a
conparison and contrast essay? (4) What does your main
point express? (5) What does the support do in comparison
and contrast? (6) Name and describe the two comparison and
contrast writing patterns.
