1. Study the material on combining sentences. You will have
a test over the material covered on the PowerPoint.
2.For more information,read page 676 "Commas in Compound
Sentences." Type and correct the first five sentences in
Practice 2 on page 676.
3. Read "Fragments That Start with Dependent Words"
on page 403-404.
4. Read chapter 11 "Illustration" on pages 167-172 and
read "WRITING GUIDE: ILLUSTRATION" on page 183. After reading
these pages, write an essay on one of these topics: Awkward
moments that I have had; Hidden problems that some people
may have; false stereotypes; the real me. Pick one of these
and develop three illustrations that support your topic.
Prewrite, outline, write and correct a draft, and print a final
copy. Hand all of these in. You paper should be 400-450 words.

Wednesday 09/16/09 and Thursday 09/17/09

1. Your Narrative Essay is due at the VERY BEGINNING
of the period. Any essay that is not on the desk when
I begin to call roll will be considered to be late and
will receive only partial credit. Hand in your essay in
this order: Final copy on top and a corrected draft under
the final copy. Below that you can include any other papers
that you have written, such as a prewriting.
2. Study your class notes and be prepared to TAKE A TEST on
the following items that we have discussed in class and,
therefore, should be in your notes. These notes go back
to the beginning of the semester. 1. What are an essay, a short
essay, and an long essay? 2. What are the four characteristics
that a thesis sentence must have? 3. What so these words mean:
simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and sensory
detail, and diction 4. What are the three categories [or forms]of
adjectives? {Reading pages 517-521 will help you.] 6. What are
five examples of fragments and two ways to join sentences. We
saw a PowerPoint on these. 7. What do "comma splice" and "fused
sentence" mean? [PowerPoint] 8. How do you narrow a topic?
9. What are the five prewriting techniques? THIS TEST WILL
PRIMARILY BE A FILL-IN-THE-BLANK TEST or LISTING.

Due Monday, 14 Sept at 11 am or Tuesday 15 Sept at 9:30

ASSIGNMENT FOUR:
1. Complete the formal outline of the forty-four items listed
on the assignment sheet. Type it or print it very clearly.
Remember that you must use all the items.
2. Read your Narrative assignment sheet. Decide on the
event you will write about and prepare an outline, either
simple or formal. Your thesis sentence should be like this:
Being mugged last summer was a horrifying experience. The
topic is "being mugged" and the comment is "horrifying." THE
FINAL COPY OF THIS ESSAY WILL BE DUE THE SECOND CLASS PERIOD,
EITHER WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY.
3. Read page 77 "Write a Thesis That is Neither Too Broad Nor
Too Narrow." On page 80, type Practice 1 by typing the number
and then typing an acceptable thesis sentence for each number.
Be sure that each thesis sentence meets the four requirements
that we discussed in class.

Due Monday 9/07 (hand in Wednesday) and Tuesday 9/08

Assignment Three:
1. Read "Essay Structure" on pages 49-50. Type and answer
these questions: (1)What is an essay? (2) What is a short
essay? (3) What is a long essay? BE SURE TO ANSWER THESE
IN COMPLETE SENTENCES (E.G. A SHORT ESSAY IS . . . . )
2. List the four qualites of a thesis sentence as we discussed
them in class. Just the number 2 and type the qualities [doublespaced].
3. On page 77, read "Write a Thesis That Is Neither Too Broad Nor
Too Narrow" and on page 81, Practice 3, type the numbers 1-5 and
before each number type B for too broad, N for too narrow and
OK if the statement is all right as a thesis sentence,
3. Read "Use Prewriting Techniques" on pages 68-71. List the
five prewriting techniques and under each one type a brief
description of each method so that anyone reading your description
would know how to do it.
